India to Boost Thermal Power Capacity

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India plans to significantly bolster its thermal power capacity by adding 80 gigawatts (GW) by 2032 in response to surging electricity demand, as highlighted in a recent Information and Credit Rating Agency of India Limited webinar. This strategic move comes amid expectations of a 6% rise in electricity demand in fiscal-year 2025, following an 11% increase in the first quarter, driven by robust economic activity.

The plant load factor (PLF) for thermal power is projected to remain stable at 70% in 2025, supported by demand growth and limited new thermal capacity additions. Meanwhile, renewable energy contributions are also on the rise, with more than 30 GW expected to come online in fiscal-year 2025, pushing India's total power generation capacity to 470 GW. Coal stock levels are satisfactory due to improved domestic supply and increased imports, which are projected to make up 7% of thermal utilities' coal consumption in 2025, ensuring a steady fuel supply for the expanding infrastructure.
