Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Crompton Greaves (BSE:500093) (CG) (Mumbai, India), which is India's major electrical engineering and transformer manufacturing company, has broken into the U.K. offshore wind market with a contract to design, engineer, supply and install offshore substations for E.ON's (OTC:EONGY) (Dusseldorf, Germany) 219-megawatt (MW) Humber Gateway offshore windfarm.
Power from the 73 wind turbines will be collected and delivered to the 280-megavolt-ampere (MVA) offshore substation platform. There the power will be increased to 132 kilovolts (kV) and delivered onshore via two export cables to a new national grid substation, which will be sited 30 kilometers inland at Hedon on Staithes Road, Hull, in northeast England.
The scope of the multi-million dollar contract covers detailed electrical-system design with grid code compliance; the supply of a high-voltage offshore substation, consisting of two step-up power transformers; medium- and high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear installed by E.ON on a single-jacket foundation; and a 132/275 kV onshore substation works, including two large auto transformers, reactive power compensation equipment, high-voltage switchgear, an IEC 61850-based supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), protection, and control and civil works.
The substations are scheduled for installation and commissioning in 2013 and are to become fully operational in early 2014.
Laurent Demortier, the chief executive officer and managing director of CG, said that the U.K. would see 18,000 MW of offshore wind power installed by 2020. "This first win provides CG a launch pad to secure a strong market share in this strategic sector and contribute to U.K's 2020 green energy targets," he said.
