India has an installed hydropower capacity of 46,850 megawatts (MW). However, it is estimated that India has the hydropower potential of 145,320 MW. India has a target of 500 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy by 2030, and to achieve this, India needs to add 25 GW of renewable energy capacity annually for the next eight years.

The government of India has increased financial allocation, along with other non-financial support, to prioritize hydropower development.
