Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) (Mumbai, India), the country's only nuclear power producer, has entered into an alliance with Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGENCO) (Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh) for the development of a 6,000-megawatt (MW) nuclear power plant in Andhra Pradesh.
NPCIL has plans to build a $2.5 billion, 6,000-MW light water reactor nuclear power plant in Kovvada Matsyalesam Village, Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh. This is the first time that NPCIL has joined a state utility for a power project. The company will help NPCIL perform the necessary groundwork for the proposed plant. As a part of this arrangement, APGENCO has called tenders to carry out geological and geotechnical studies. The plant is one of the six nuclear plants proposed in the country. Uranium Corporation of India has been focusing on the Lambapur-Peddagattu area in the Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh for uranium mining.
The Indian government has given approval to two American Companies, General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) and Westinghouse Electric Company (Monrroeville, Pennsylvania) to provide the technology, design and other aspects of the plant. Larsen & Toubro Limited (BSE:500510) (Mumbai) has entered into an agreement with these companies to construct the power plant. India's central government has approved two sites in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat for setting up imported American reactors. Six 1,000-MWe reactors will be erected at Kovvada in collaboration with the Russia's Atomstroyexport (Moscow).
The Centre accorded approval in principle for setting up the plant in three phases. In the first phase, two 1,000-MW units will be developed by 2017. Two subsequent phases are expected to be completed by 2020. The plant will be set up on 2,000 acres and will produce 6,000 MW of electricity without polluting the environment.
Pre-project activity is likely to be completed by mid-2012, and construction is planned to begin by December 2012. NPCIL has already made arrangements for the supply of uranium to the plant. With the establishment of this plant, infrastructure in this area will also develop.
