Indonesia Accelerates Geothermal Development in East Nusa Tengarra, an Industrial Info Market Brief
Indonesia aims to increase the electrification ratio in its East Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Timur) province through the accelerated development of geothermal-sourced power generation

Indonesia aims to increase the electrification ratio in its East Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Timur) province through the accelerated development of geothermal-sourced power generation. The Research & Development and Geological agencies of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with PT PLN (Persero) to drill production wells for the planned Marana Geothermal Power Station.
Most of the growing electricity demand for East Nusa Tenggara is currently met by diesel-fired power plants. PT PLN agreed to work with the Geological Agency on several geothermal studies. The electrification ratio of East Nusa Tenggara is among the lowest in Indonesia; until recently, it stood at only 72%. But the province, especially Flores Island, is believed to have considerable geothermal potential.
Industrial Info is tracking six geothermal projects in the Flores area worth a total $260 million, along with several projects in Bajawa, Ende, Alor, Ruteng, Sumba and Pulu. Click here for a list of active geothermal projects in Indonesia, and see chart below for a breakdown by province.
