Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking U.S. wind power projects worth $18.29 billion that either have been completed, or are planned for completion, in 2019. However, about a third of those projects are slated for completion in just the month of December.

December historically has been the most significant month for onshore wind capacity additions in the U.S., driven by changes in tax incentives, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). The phase-out of the federal Production Tax Credit (PTC) for wind power largely has been the driving force behind the increase in wind capacity additions in 2019. Over the past nine years (2010-2018), 43% of all onshore wind capacity has been added in December.
The EIA expects a near-record of 12.2 gigawatts (GW) in wind power capacity will be added in 2019, including 7.2 GW just in December.
Cumulative U.S. installed onshore wind capacity exceeded 100 gigawatts (GW) on a nameplate capacity basis as of the end of September 2019, according to the EIA. Texas had the most capacity installed, at 26.9 GW, followed by Iowa, Oklahoma and Kansas. Together, the four states accounted for half of the total U.S. installed wind capacity.
The priciest wind project to reach completion this year was Xcel Energy Incorporated's (NASDAQ:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) $769 million Hale Wind Project in Plainview, Texas. Completed in May, the windfarm has a capacity of 478 megawatts (MW) and includes 239 Vestas power generators. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
One of the wind facilities planned for completion this month is Berkshire Hathaway Incorporated's (NYSE:BRK.A) (Omaha, Nebraska) $500 million Arbor Hill Windfarm, part of the Wind XI Windfarm project. The 250-MW windfarm includes 125 Vestas power generators. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In comparison with the $18.29 billion worth of projects in 2020, $10.71 billion in U.S. wind projects were completed in 2018, and $12.79 billion were completed in 2017, according to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Platform.
The EIA expects that another 14.3 GW of wind capacity will come online in 2020. Nearly $36 billion worth of wind projects are planned for completion next year in the U.S., according to Industrial Info's project database. All but about $3 billion of that activity is assessed as having a high (81-99%) or medium (70-80%) probability of moving forward as planned.
One of the projects planned for completion next year is Apex Clean Energy Incorporated's (Charlottesville, Virginia) $900 million Grape Creek Windfarm in Robert Lee, Texas. Utilizing 185 General Electric wind turbine generators, it will generate 525 MW. True to form, it is slated for completion next December. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Windfarm project kickoffs this year and next are nothing to sneeze at either. Industrial Info is tracking $29.93 billion worth of kickoff activity in 2019, and $53.25 billion worth in 2020; less than half the amount in 2020 is tied to projects with a high or medium probability of moving forward as planned.
