Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas--While Indiana is often thought of as America's heartland, the Hoosier State also has quite a bit of industrial activity. Industrial Info is tracking more than $11 billion worth of projects under construction in the state. The Industrial Manufacturing Industry leads in both project count and value, accounting for more than half of the total value. This is largely due to the state's automotive sector and warehousing and distribution projects.

Among Indiana's largest underway projects is FedEx Corporation's (NYSE:FDX) (Memphis, Tennessee) expansion of its international air hub in Indianapolis. The project entails constructing 16 new aircraft gates, two package-sorting facilities, a refrigerated building for perishable shipments and another building to handle truck deliveries. The aim is to have the facility process 147,000 packages per hour upon completion in 2023. Construction has been underway since 2018. It should come as no surprise that e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) also is developing its warehousing and distribution footprint in the state with at least three projects under construction. Among these is Project Winnie, a grassroot robotic fulfillment center in Elkhart, in the north of the state near the Michigan border. The project includes constructing a five-story, 4 million-square-foot center facility with robotics and supporting equipment to pick, pack and ship smaller items, such as books, electronics and other consumer goods.
About 65 miles southeast of Elkhart, Amazon is underway with a smaller, 2.9 million-square-foot distribution center in Fort Wayne that will feature 49 loading docks to help support distribution and deliveries in the area.
The Elkhart project is expected to be completed in early 2023, while the Fort Wayne project is on track for completion in the coming months. Subscribers can click here for the report on the Elkhart project and here for the Fort Wayne project.
In the southwest of the state, Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:TM) (Toyota City, Japan) is underway with expansion and retooling projects at its plant in Princeton. Upon completion of one of these projects late next year, the facility will be able to produce two new SUV models, one Toyota and one Lexus. Both models will be electric. This will be the first time the Princeton plant has assembled a Lexus vehicle. Subscribers can click here for the project report. Another project to increase the production of the company's popular Highlander SUVs by 40,000 units per year also is underway at the plant and expected to be completed this year. This project began in 2019. Subscribers can click here for the detailed report.
Outside of the Industrial Manufacturing Industry, one of Indiana's biggest projects under construction is the expansion and modernization of Lehigh Hanson Incorporated's (Irving, Texas) cement plant in Mitchell. The project entails replacing three outdated long dry rotary kiln lines with a new line and supporting equipment to increase cement production to 2.8 million tons per year through newer technologies. The line also will feature more up-to-date environmental control systems, reducing energy use and emissions. Engineering, procurement and construction contractor KHD Humboldt Wedag Incorporated (Cologne, Germany) kicked off work in late 2020, and the project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2023. Like other states, Indiana is aiming for greener power generation, although its renewable energy requirements aren't as stringent as other states. Its Clean Energy Portfolio Standard is a voluntary program setting the goal of 10% clean energy by 2025. Solar power seems to be the dominating form of renewable project activity in the state. Examples of solar projects under construction include NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) Dunns Bridge I photovoltaic plant in Jasper and Starke counties. Phase I, which kicked off in 2021, will use 900,000 solar panels to produce about 265 megawatts (MW). Also under construction at the site is a 75-MW battery energy storage system (BESS). Both projects are expected to be completed next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can click here for the report on the solar facility and here for the BESS.
