Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--While one of Michigan's biggest industrial projects under construction does, in fact, involve automobiles, the state is home to projects spanning a range of different sectors, including warehousing and distribution, power, and pharma-biotech. Industrial Info is tracking $7.5 billion worth of projects under construction in the state, with the Industrial Manufacturing Industry leading in terms of project value.

By far, the largest project under construction in Michigan is Ultium Cells LLC's (Warren, Ohio) grassroot automotive battery plant in Lansing. Construction kicked off earlier this year and entails building a 2.8 million-square-foot building with supporting equipment to produce 50 gigawatt-hours of battery cells per year. The batteries will be used at General Motors' (NYSE:GM) (GM) (Detroit, Michigan) Orion electric vehicle assembly plant in Lake Orion, Michigan, and other GM facilities. The project is expected to be concluded in the second half of 2024. Ultium is a joint venture of GM and LG Energy Solution (Seoul, South Korea). Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan) also is getting in on the electric vehicle action with the expansion of its truck manufacturing plant in Dearborn. The 2.6 million-square-foot plant will have new production and supporting equipment installed to double production of the F-150 Lightning, Ford's all-electric pickup. Demand for the F-150 Lightning is high, with vehicles being sold through a reservation process. Production of the truck began earlier this year, with reservations for purchase easily spilling into 2023, according to news media. The expansion will double Ford's production of the vehicle and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2023. Subscribers can click here for more details.

A majority of U.S. states seem to have at least one project underway from e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), and Michigan boasts a few from the company. Among the largest of these is a brownfield distribution center on a site at the former Michigan State Fair Grounds in Detroit. General contractor Gray Construction (Lexington, Kentucky) kicked off construction in 2020, and the project is approaching completion, with the promise of 1,200 new jobs. Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Incorporated (NYSE:PFE) (New York, New York) is expanding its campus in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with a two-story, 400,000-square-foot building to manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients for a variety of finished drug products, including its antiviral Paxlovid, used to lessen the symptoms of COVID-19. Construction kicked off in early 2021 and is expected to wrap up by the end of this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pharma-Biotech Project Database can click here for more details.

Like other states, renewable energy is moving into Michigan in the form of both wind and solar power. In Albion, about 45 miles east of Kalamazoo, NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) is underway with construction of its River Fork photovoltaic plant. Construction had been delayed by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, but finally kicked off late last year. The facility will use 560,000 solar modules on a single-axis tracking system to achieve a nameplate generating capacity of 149 megawatts (MW). The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can click here for the report.

In Kinde, Michigan, Algonquin Power & Utilities Corporation (NYSE:AQN) (Oakville, Ontario) is at work on a Phase II expansion of its Deerfield Windfarm. Phase II will add 21 5.6-MW turbines to achieve more than 110 MW of additional generating capacity at the facility. Construction kicked off earlier this year and is expected to be completed by yearend. Subscribers can click here for additional project details.
