Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As President Obama surveys the damage firsthand today, residents and industry are reeling in the aftermath of the horrendous loss of life and storm damage caused by tornado storms this week in the Southeast region. The concern now is to get aid to those who need it and restore power to the area. TVA reported that a good number of electric transmission lines were torn down in Mississippi and Northern Alabama. This continues to cause a series of outages in the area.
It appears most Metals & Minerals facilities escaped major damage. Exceptions include Independence Tube Corporation (Chicago, Illinois), which operates a 435,000-square-foot plant on the banks of the Tennessee River in Decatur, Alabama. Phone service to the plant was down on Friday, and according to the corporate office the plant was "destroyed" by the storm and the company is currently evaluating the damage. The plant was constructed at a cost in excess of $30 million and had operated for a few years, having recently opened in 2006. A 170,000-square-foot, $15 million expansion was completed late last year.
