Ineos Phenol Evaluates Further Expansion Plans for Phenol Production in the United States, Europe and Asia

Ineos Phenol (Gladbeck, Germany) has invested in several debottlenecks at its Theodore, Alabama plant over the last couple of years, in order to increase the production of phenol to its current rate of approximately 500,000 metric tons per year. Planning has begun for an expansion of the site that could potentially double the plant’s capacity within the next two years.

Ineos Phenol completed a major maintenance turnaround of the Theodore site earlier this year and is planning its next major turnaround of the plant for early 2007, a project that will take two to three weeks at the cost of several million dollars. The Theodore plant site has been in operation for just over five years, having starting up in May of 2000 after being constructed by Brown & Root Incorporated (Houston, Texas).

Ineos is also moving forward with plans for a major capacity increase of phenol at its Antwerp, Belgium plant to begin this year. Jacobs Belgie N V (Antwerp, Belgium) has been hired as the engineering and construction contractor for this project which is expected to increase production by nearly 200,000 metric tons per year when completed in late 2006.

The very early phases of planning have begun for a grassroot phenol and acetone plant to be located potentially in China. As reported by Industrialinfo.com in May of this year, this plant could have a capacity of 400,000 metric tons per year when complete in 2008.
