Infigen Energy Plans Expansion of Capital Windfarm

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Infigen Energy Limited (ASX:IFN) (Sydney, Australia) is in the process of obtaining planning approvals for a $180 million expansion of its existing Capital Windfarm, which is near Bungendore in New South Wales, Australia.

A major project application for the expansion was submitted in August of last year, with the director general's requirements released the next month. The application is on public exhibition, meaning that there are opportunities for public submissions to be made. When the exhibition period concludes next month, it is expected that approvals will be issued promptly.

Infigen Energy has applied for approval to erect 30 to 55 wind turbines; however, it is most likely that the expansion will consist of 55 turbines at an output capacity of 3 megawatts (MW) each. The company will go out to tender for two packages: turbine supply and erection, and balance of plant. This deviates from their past strategy, which involved hiring a turnkey contractor.

Infigen Energy hopes to have financial approval obtained in the second quarter of this year, and release requests for quotation immediately afterward. Construction is scheduled to begin in August of this year and is expected to be completed in September 2012.

Infigen Energy, in conjunction with solar technology producer Suntech Power Holdings Company Limited (NYSE:STP) (Wuxi, China), is also developing a solar photovoltaic project to be located adjacent to the windfarm. The solar farm will share the windfarm's existing substation. With a total investment value (TIV) of $150 million and an expected output of 50 MW, the project will include the construction of a research infrastructure facility. Construction of the Capital Solar Farm is scheduled to begin in March 2012 and will run concurrently with construction of the windfarm expansion.

Capital Windfarm is the largest-capacity windfarm operating in New South Wales. Infigen Energy currently has five operating windfarms in Australia with a total installed capacity of 508 MW, three of which are in Lake Bonney, South Australia.
