Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--In a bid to expedite execution of their multibillion-dollar Al-Duqm Refinery Project, Oman Oil Company (OOC) (Muscat, Oman) and International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) have ramped up their effort to select a front-end engineering and design (FEED) contractor for the grassroot project by August 2012.
KBC Advanced Technologies plc (LSE:KBC) (Walton-on-Thames, England) has completed the detailed feasibility study for the project. As per the detailed feasibility report, the project will be completed in two phases. The first phase involves development of the Duqm Petrochemical Complex, which will house one of the world's largest polypropylene plants, while the second phase envisages establishing a mixed feedstock aromatics facility. The $6 billion Duqm oil refinery project, which will have a capacity of 230,000 barrels per day, is expected to be completed during the fourth quarter of 2016.
As a part of grassroot refinery project, several major units will be added, including a crude unit, a vacuum gas-oil hydrotreater, a delayed coker unit, a fluid catalytic cracker unit, a diesel hydrotreater unit, a naphtha hydrotreater along with sulphur recovery and amine regeneration unit, along with the other associated utilities. The will increase the production of valuable petroleum and petrochemical products and will help Oman to implement clean fuel technology.
The proposed Duqm Refinery and Petrochemicals Complex has been envisaged as vital component of the Omani government's plan to develop Duqm into a major industrial hub, alongside a world-scale ship repair yard. Pertinently, a 900-kilometer railway line between the United Arab Emirates and Duqm has been planned in the first phase of the Oman's national railway development plan. The Ministry of Transport and Communications already has floated a tender for designing the route. The railway link is expected to start operations by 2018. Duqm will be later connected with Yemen through the second-phase extension of the railway link.
