Jamaica Turns to Bamboo to Develop Pulp, Paper Industry

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Jamaica is developing its Pulp, Paper & Wood Industry, with its abundant bamboo plants as the chief raw material. With an investment of about $300 million, Bamboo Bioproducts plans to build a new bamboo pulp mill in Frome, a village in the Westmoreland parish, to focus on pulp for paper production.

Jamaica expects bamboo pulp will be an advantageous export product, and the mill is designed to use a mix of clean and renewable energy sources. The Frome mill will be sold to multinational corporations associated with Bamboo Bioproducts Limited.

Pulp is one of the most abundant raw materials worldwide. Wood pulp, the most used paper pulp, is created by processing wood collected from trees, and serves as the basis for a wide range of paper-based products, including paper used in books, magazines and newspapers, as well as disposable paper plates, paper towels and other common household items.
