Kansai Electric to Lend LNG to Struggling Tokyo Electric Power Company

Researched by Industrial Info Resources East Asia (Kofu-shi, Japan)--Kansai Electric Power Company Incorporated (TYO:9503) (Kanden) (Osaka, Japan) has announced that it will be lending counterpart Tokyo Electric Power Company Incorporated (TYO:9501) (TEPCO) (Tokyo) crude and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to help it overcome fuel shortages. Currently, 14 of TEPCO's 17 nuclear reactors at three separate nuclear facilities are offline, representing 12,297 megawatts (MW). In addition to offline nuclear facilities, approximately 9,800 MW of thermal power, fired primarily via LNG and fuel oil, remain offline as well.

The following TEPCO power generation facilities or units are currently offline:

  • 4,698-MW Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station; Okuma, Fukushima prefecture
  • 4,400-MW Fukushima Daini nuclear power station; Naraha/Tomioka, Fukushima prefecture
  • 1,067-MW units 2, 3, 4 of Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station; Kashiwazaki/Kariwa, Niigata prefecture. Still offline due to 2007 Chuetsu Earthquake; no restart date.
  • 4,000-MW, Kashima, Ibaraki oil-fired power station
  • 2,000-MW, Hitachinaka, Ibaraki coal-fired power station
  • 3,800-MW Hirono oil/coal-fired power station; Hirono, Fukushima prefecture
Kanden is planning to lend TEPCO 60,000 tons of LNG and 25,000 kiloliters of crude oil currently in stock, as well as 60,000 kiloliters of crude oil that will be arriving in Japan soon. Kanden also is planning to direct power from at least two of its hydropower stations for a total of 100 MW; however, this might not be as effective due to a 10-hertz difference between western and eastern Japan.
