Killen Station to Test-Fire Biomass in Coal-Fired Unit

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Dayton Power and Light Company (DP&L), a subsidiary of DPL Incorporated (NYSE:DPL) (Dayton, Ohio), and Duke Energy Generation Services (Cincinnati, Ohio), a subsidiary of Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina), have a permit to test-burn biomass with bituminous coal at Killen Station's Unit 2 to determine how much can be burned without major modifications.

The 4.55 million-pound-per-hour Killen Unit 2 is a Babcock & Wilcox dry-bottom, pulverized coal opposed-fired boiler. DP&L owns 67% of the station, while Duke Energy Generation Services owns 33%.

DP&L expects the tests to show that co-firing will allow a fuel with about 5% biomass to help meet renewable energy and air quality requirements. The unit already has low NOx burners, an electrostatic precipitator, a selective catalytic reduction unit, and a wet flue-gas desulfurization unit to meet air quality requirements.
