Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--State-owned Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) (Bengaluru, Karnataka) is scouting for an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor to execute its proposed 20-megawatt (MW) Ghtaprabha hydro electric project in Karnataka. The power utility has recently floated a global e-tender for the purpose.

Due to be developed at Hidkal village in the Belgaum district of the state, the project will have two 10-megawatt (MW) generating units, which are scheduled to be commissioned within 30 months from the date of commencement of construction.

According to KPCL, the scope of work for the contract would involve the design, engineering, manufacture, supply, transportation, storage, construction, erection, testing and commissioning of the plant along with the execution of civil, structural, electro-mechanical and hydro mechanical work on EPC basis. The contractor will also be responsible for project management work as well as for the supply of mandatory spares, tools and tackles needed for commissioning of the plant.

As per the precondition laid down by KPCL, to qualify for this package a bidder should be a manufacturer of hydro generating units and have designed, manufactured, and supplied at least two vertical Kaplan turbine units of 10 MW or higher capacity. Manufacturers of only hydro turbines, with the experience of supplying two vertical Kaplan turbines of the specified capacity, as well as the EPC-firms can also submit bids. However, an EPC-firm would be required to collaborate with a manufacturer of hydro generating units who fulfills the same qualifying requirements.

Moreover, the units supplied, in all the cases, should be in satisfactory operation for a minimum of two consecutive years in the preceding 10 years. Additionally, the bidders would be required to meet the financial criteria stipulated by KPCL. Submission of bid is closing at 15 hours Indian Standard Time (IST) on July 31, 2013.

KPCL is a State Government of Karnataka-owned enterprise. The company currently has an installed generation capacity of 5,975.91 MW through hydel, thermal, solar and wind energy sources; while another 9,500 MW capacity is under various stages of implementation.
