Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--By all accounts, California's Los Angeles County is a busy place. Home to more than 10 million people, two major ports, a growing mass transportation system and a big slice of the nation's entertainment industry, if Los Angeles County were its own country it would be the 19th largest economy in the world, according the county's Economic Development Corporation. As such, the county stands head and shoulders above the rest in the state in total active projects. For just the second half of 2016, the county will see construction kickoffs for projects with a combined worth of as much as $1.14 billion, according to Industrial Info's database. Industrial Manufacturing, Pharmaceutical & Biotech and Power projects top the list of kickoffs for July through December.
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and HDR Incorporated (Omaha, Nebraska) (Infra Consult) Engineering continue detailed design work on the South California Regional Rail Interconnector Project. The project, valued at $350 million, includes construction of four track lines from Union Station over 101 Freeway and connecting to tracks along the west bank of the Los Angeles River. Kickoff is now planned for October, with completion in fourth-quarter 2019.
Mass transit projects are often subject to the vagaries of public funding, but the Transportation Authority plans to ask voters in November to approve a half-cent sales tax increase to fund expansion of the region's rail and highway network, according to the Los Angeles Times. The transit authority's budget for fiscal year 2017 includes $2 billion for various capital projects.
In the pharma-bio arena, Grifols International, SA's (NASDAQ: GRFS) (Barcelona, Spain) $100 million Los Angeles Blood Derivatives & Protein Therapeutics Plant Addition is tentatively set for kickoff in October, with completion in first-quarter 2018. To be located on the site of a recently demolished campus building, the addition will be used to increase production of blood plasmas derivatives and/or be used for research and development.
Only one Power Industry project is set for kickoff before the end of this year, but the 52-megawatt Antelope PV Solar Greenworks Project by sPower Sustainable Power Group (Salt Lake City, Utah) has a $144 million price tag. Located on 135.6 acres of previously farmed land, the facility will produce renewable energy for the local grid. Construction is set to kick off this month, with completion in March 2017.
