Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Earlier this week, the Louisiana Public Service Commission (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) voted to approve Entergy Corporation's (NYSE:ETR) (New Orleans, Louisiana) construction of the Lake Charles Power Station in Westlake, Louisiana. Industrial Info is tracking $5.81 billion in Entergy projects, including $2.46 billion in Louisiana.
Entergy expects to issue notice to proceed with construction on the 994-megawatt (MW) Lake Charles plant by August 1. The natural gas-fired, combined-cycle facility is being constructed on a brownfield site near an existing power plant and is scheduled to be in service by June 2020. The facility will cost approximately $872 million. Chicago Bridge & Iron Company (NSYE:CBI) (CB&I) (Granvenhage, Netherlands) is acting as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm on the project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The project is part of Entergy's plan to build out natural gas-fired generating facilities, as companies rush to take advantage of the cheap and abundant fuel in the U.S. Also in Louisiana, Entergy is under way with the construction with the 980-MW combined-cycle addition at the St. Charles Energy Center in Montz, Louisiana. The project will add 980 MW of natural gas-fired power to the existing, aging facility. CB&I also is acting as EPC firm on the $1 billion project, which is expected to be completed in June 2019. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Texas, Entergy is in the preliminary engineering stage for a 993-MW combined-cycle project at the Lewis Creek Power Station in Willis. The project is planned to kick off in summer 2018 and be completed in the second quarter of 2021. CB&I is acting as EPC contractor. The project has an estimated total investment value of $937 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Just as natural gas-fired construction is a sign of the times in the U.S., so is another aspect of the Power Industry: the closure of smaller nuclear plants, which cannot compete with the rise in cheaper natural gas operations. One of Entergy's biggest projects involves the dismantlement and demolition of the 620-MW Vermont Yankee nuclear power station in Vernon, Vermont. The plant was shut down in late 2014. Dismantlement is set to begin in early 2019. TLG Services (Bridgewater, Connecticut) is performing engineering services for the project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
As environmental regulations become more stringent, another sign of the times is environmental retrofits to coal-fired facilities. Entergy is gearing up for a retrofit to control nitrogen oxides (NOx) for the 850-MW Unit 1 at its White Bluff Power Station in Redfield, Arkansas. The $80 million project is planned to kick off later this year. Sargent & Lundy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) is performing engineering services for the project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
