Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $22 billion worth of industrial projects that are presently under construction in the New England market region, which comprises Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. While the Power Industry leads the region in terms of spending, the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry comes in a close second place, largely due to a concentration of projects around Boston, Massachusetts.

One of the largest projects presently under construction in New England comes from a sector that faces an uncertain future in the U.S.: offshore wind. Inaugurated yesterday, President Donald Trump has stated that he will put a stop to the construction of offshore wind facilities in U.S. waters. Nevertheless, certain projects have already been built or are underway, such as Orsted A/S' (Fredericia, Denmark) Revolution Windfarm, located 15 miles off the Rhode Island coast. Having kicked off construction early last year, engineering, procurement and construction contractor Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (Zamudio, Spain) is underway with the placement of 65 turbines, each rated at about 11 megawatts (MW), to achieve an aggregate generating capacity of more than 700 MW when completed toward the end of this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

Two nuclear decommissioning projects also account for a large portion of spending within the region's Power Industry. The one-reactor, 620-MW Yankee facility in Vermont and the similarly sized Pilgrim nuclear facility in Massachusetts couldn't compete with lower-priced renewable and fossil fuels and are in the decommissioning and dismantlement process. Holtec International (Jupiter, Florida) is heading up the process at Massachusetts' Pilgrim plant, while NorthStar Group Services Incorporated (New York, New York) is in charge of the Yankee decommissioning in Vermont. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports on the Pilgrim and Yankee facilities.

Industrial Info is tracking more than $8.8 billion worth of Pharmaceutical-Biotech projects under construction in the region, with an outsized proportion of these located in the Boston area. In Cambridge, Massachusetts, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (Tokyo, Japan) is underway with construction of an approximately 600,000-square-foot building that will enable the company to perform research and development operations across various disciplines, including oncology, hematology, neuroscience and gastroenterology. General contractor Suffolk Construction Company (Boston) broke ground in late 2022 and is expected to wrap up the project in mid-2026. As is relatively common in today's U.S. Pharma-Biotech sector, the 16-story building will be certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) scheme. Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Pharmaceutical-Biotech Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

While not an industrial powerhouse, Maine is hosting a significant Pulp & Paper project at a mill in Skowhegan, about 35 miles north of state capital Augusta, where Sappi Limited (Johannesburg, South Africa) is underway with the conversion of a paper machine to manufacture a different product. The conversion of the No. 2 machine will allow the plant to cease production of 90,000 tons per year of wood-free graphic paper (a non-yellowing paper with the lignin from the wood removed) and begin production of solid bleached sulphate board, a medium-density, white board with good printing properties that makes it ideal for higher-end packaging products. AFRY USA Incorporated (Appleton, Wisconsin) is providing engineering services for the conversion, which is expected to be completed later this year. While most industrial sectors are accounted for in the New England region's active construction, projects outside of power and pharmaceuticals diminish in size. However, these projects are important to the cities and communities in which they are located. South Kingston, Rhode Island, can expect a change in activity in the coming months, when American Ag Energy Incorporated (Cambridge, Massachusetts) begins operations at a grassroot greenhouse and seed-processing complex that it is building on a 59-acre site. The 2.5 million-square-foot complex will support production of various crops. Approximately 4 acres will be allocated as a mushroom grow house, with additional space for mushroom packing. Even more space will be designated to both cucumbers and lettuce, and about 10 acres will be devoted to growing tomatoes. The complex also will include a seed-processing center, three 4,000-square-foot coolers, office space and a 3-acre irrigation pond. When completed in the coming months, the facility will begin ramping up toward full production of 31 million pounds of produce per year.
