Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:TM) (Toyota City, Japan) said on Tuesday it plans to invest an additional $8 billion in its electric vehicle (EV) battery-manufacturing plant under construction in North Carolina, where Industrial Info is tracking more than $10 billion worth of Industrial Manufacturing Industry projects that are underway. More than half of the activity is wrapped up in two EV projects and two semiconductor projects.
Construction on Toyota's plant in Liberty, also known as Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina (TBMNC), began in early 2022. The $1.29 billion first phase involves installing production lines plus production equipment and systems to manufacture 800,000 lithium-ion battery packs per year with the ability to ramp up to 1.2 million, and the project is expected to wrap up in 2025. A proposed expansion would ramp up production. The plant will supply both hybrid and fully electric vehicles.
The new investment will bring Toyota's total spend at TBMNC to $13.9 billion, according to a recent press release, and add capacity to support both EVs and hybrid vehicles. It allows for an additional eight EV and hybrid battery production lines, for a total of 10 battery lines. "Production will be increased in a phased approach, with line launches planned through 2030," the company said, to reach a total production of more than 30 gigawatt-hours (GWh) annually.

Another major EV project underway in North Carolina is Vietnamese automaker VinFast's $2 billion electric vehicle and battery plant in Moncure--the first phase of a $4 billion, two-phase investment--to manufacture electric cars and buses and EV batteries.
Phase 1 is expected to begin production in 2025 and entails constructing five main production areas--a body shop, general assembly, press shop, paint shop and an energy center, among other functionalities. Clayco Construction (Chicago, Illinois) is serving as the general contractor and construction manager for the project. The proposed $2 billion expansion is in early-stage development. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the manufacturing plant and expansion projects.
Also underway in North Carolina are two semiconductor projects from Wolfspeed Incorporated (NYSE:WOLF) (Durham, North Carolina) expected to wrap up next year. Construction of the company's $2 billion grassroot semiconductor plant in Siler City involves building an approximately 400,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, to increase production capacity of 200-millimeter silicon-carbide semiconductor wafers in the U.S. to support EV production and other applications. The project is the first phase of a $4.8 billion investment. Also underway is Wolfspeed's $1.3 billion expansion of its semiconductor campus in Durham, which entails building out a vacant 253,000-square-foot building to provide 18 times more manufacturing space than currently available. Subscribers can read more information on the Siler City and Durham projects.
Meanwhile, investments in the distribution and warehousing and heavy manufacturing sectors round out most of the remaining Industrial Manufacturing project activity underway in the state.
One example is the $262 million Mebane Distribution Center in Alamance County, which is being built for United Parcel Service Incorporated (NYSE:UPS) (UPS) (Atlanta, Georgia) by local real estate developer and construction service provider Samet Corporation (Greensboro, North Carolina). The project, which is expected to wrap up in February, involves building a 525,000-square-foot building with an initial processing capacity of 15,000 packages per hour, ramping up to 30,000 packages per hour later in 2024. In terms of heavy manufacturing, construction of a $220 million passenger rail car manufacturing plant in Lexington for Siemens AG's (Munich, Germany) Siemens Mobility division, is expected to wrap up in August 2024. The project, dubbed Project Gemini, involves constructing an approximately 300,000-500,000-square-foot manufacturing building to produce an estimated 264 passenger rail cars per year at full buildout. Siemens builds passenger rail coaches for Amtrak as well as light rail and streetcars for cities in North America. Click here to read more information on the project.
