Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Perth, Australia)--Meridian Energy Australia (Victoria, Australia), a wholly owned subsidiary of Meridian Energy Limited (Wellington, New Zealand), has announced that construction has begun on the Mount Mercer Windfarm in Australia.
The Victoria-based energy company has announced that the windfarm, located 30 kilometers south of Ballarat, Victoria, will have a generating capacity of 131 megawatts (MW). The project has an estimated value of about $260 million and will use 64 Repower MM92 turbines, rated at 2.05 MW each, from German turbine manufacturer, RePower Australia Pty Limited (Hamburg, Germany).
The proposal for the Mount Mercer project was first made in 2007 by WestWind Energy Pty Limited (Nienburg, Germany). Meridian Energy bought the windfarm from WestWind in 2009 and made several changes to the original design to meet the consent requirements. The windfarm will supply sufficient energy to meet the electricity needs of the entire population of Ballarat.
"We are delighted to announce that we have begun the construction of our latest Victoria-based windfarm," said Paul Chambers, Chief of Meridian. "Australia's long-term regulatory support and the quality of this project ensures that Meridian will get an excellent return on Mount Mercer."
The 131-MW windfarm will make a substantial contribution to meet Australia's Mandatory Renewable Energy Targets to produce one-fifth of electricity generation from renewable sources by 2020.
Meridian has awarded the engineering and procurement contract to Downer EDI Engineering Pty Limited (Sydney, Australia) and the civil contract to Powercor Network Services Pty Limited (Victoria, Australia). With a focused timeline for construction, the company is hoping to begin operations on the windfarm by mid-2014. Downer and Powercor will finish construction on the internal access tracks across the windfarm site by the third quarter of 2013 and will install the turbines by the end of the second quarter of 2014.
Meridian Energy owns and operates the 70-MW Mount Millar Windfarm in South Australia. The company is currently constructing the $1 billion Macarthur Windfarm in a joint venture with AGL Energy Limited (New South Wales, Australia). The windfarm, which will be the largest facility in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the largest in the world, is expected to begin operations by March 2013.
