Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Kentucky, known for its bourbon and race horses, is a hub of industrial activity, with $4.6 billion worth of projects under construction. Thanks to a large steel mill project, the Metals & Minerals Industry takes the lead in regard to project value, followed by the Industrial Manufacturing Industry.

By far the largest project in the state is Nucor Corporation's (NYSE:NUE) grassroot steel plate mill in Brandenburg, Kentucky, which has a price tag of $1.7 billion. The 1.5 million-square-foot, 1.2 million-ton-per-year mill will feature state-of-the-art equipment to produce cut-to-length, coiled, heat-treated and discrete plates. Work on the mill began in October. In November, Nucor announced that it would be adding a blast and prime line to the facility with an annual capacity of 120,000 tons to provide broader offerings of wider and thicker plate products. An associated rail loop for shipping also is being constructed. The projects are expected to be completed in late 2022. Projects for fabricated metal products in the form of aluminum cans represent some of the largest Industrial Manufacturing projects underway in Kentucky. In the production process, the tops of aluminum cans, known as ends, are sealed onto the rest of the can after filling. Ball Corporation (NYSE:BLL) (Broomfield, Colorado) is at work on a grassroot aluminum can end manufacturing plant in Bowling Green to supply the beverage market. Production is set to kick off next year, and in a press release, Ball said it would expand the plant over multiple years. The U.S. is facing a shortage of aluminum cans, causing projects in this area to become more prevalent. Also in Bowling Green, Crown Holdings Incorporated (NYSE:CCK) (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is constructing a grassroot aluminum can manufacturing plant. The facility will be able to produce 2,800 cans per minute, translating into 1.3 billion cans per year. The plant is expected to be completed early next year. Subscribers can click here for the project report.

Rounding out the top three industries by project value is the Chemical Processing Industry. Examples of projects in this sector include Danimer Scientific's (Bainbridge, Georgia) retrofit to an existing plant in Winchester, Kentucky, to produce polymer-based resins. A new extruder and downstream processing equipment are being added to produce 20 million pounds per year of biodegradable polymer. According to Danimer, the company already has signed supply agreements to companies who will purchase the polymer for products such as drinking straws, takeout food containers and produce bags. Construction is expected to be completed in the first half of next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Chemical Processing Project Database can click here for the project report.

Also making a strong showing in Kentucky's project activity is the Food & Beverage Industry, with several projects occurring at the state's famous distilleries. In Frankfort, Buffalo Trace Distillery (Frankfort) is adding a barrel-aging warehouse addition and expanding its wastewater treatment plant at its facility. The warehouse expansion involves the construction of two new barrel-aging warehouses that can hold 58,800 barrels each. The new wastewater facility will use a moving bed biofilm reactor, which uses an aeration tank with special plastic carriers that provide a surface on which biofilm can grow to treat the water. Both projects are expected to be completed in the first half of next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for the project report on the barrel warehouse addition and here for the wastewater treatment facility.
