February 26, 2025--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced a US$15.5 billion investment plan for new power-generation projects and US$2.2 billion in transmission and distribution infrastructure for 2025-2030.
The investments are divided into two stages and would be carried out by the state-owned Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE). The first stage includes 12 projects that are in an advanced stage of development and soon to be tendered, with dates of commercial operation planned between the end of 2027 and mid-2029. These include six solar projects with battery energy storage systems (BESS), with 1.67 gigawatts (GW) of generation capacity, 574 megawatts (MW) of storage and a total investment of US$2.4 billion. Six combined-cycle and internal combustion projects are also being contemplated, totaling 3.7 GW of new installed capacity and about US$3 billion in investments.
In the second stage, 3 GW of photovoltaic generation capacity and seven wind projects with an aggregate capacity of 2.5 GW in early stages of development are planned. In addition, CFE is working with state-owned Petroleos Mexicanos SA de CV (Pemex) (Mexico City) to develop three cogeneration projects totaling US$2 billion, to install 794 MW of electricity and steam generating units in Tula, 728 MW in Salina Cruz and 900 MW in Cangrejera.
In addition to these new projects, 26 projects initiated in the previous administration are completed: 10 combined cycle projects for a total of 6.7 GW in new combined-cycle capacity and 16 hydroelectric projects for a total of 535 MW.
Regarding the transmission and distribution infrastructure, more than US$2.2 billion is being contemplated for the development of 65 projects to modernize the National Transmission Network (RNT); 149 projects aimed at the modernization and expansion of the General Distribution Networks (RGD); and numerous small projects aimed at rural electrification works and installation of individual solar modules.
