Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Mid-Atlantic region has $3.1 billion in Power Industry projects that are set to start from July through September this year. The Mid-Atlantic region includes Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Virginia, with more than $895 million in planned project starts, leads in terms of project value.

Among the largest planned projects is Exelon Corporation's (NYSE:EXC) (Chicago, Illinois) Capital Grid Project in the Washington, D.C., area. The project entails upgrading several substations and constructing transmission lines to improve system reliability for the D.C. area and support a projected increase of power demand. The combined projects have an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $851 million. The project is expected to kick off soon and last several years. Several solar power projects will begin in the quarter in the region. Among these is Dominion Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) 80-MW Grasshopper photovoltaic solar plant near Chase City, Virginia. The facility will be constructed on 946 acres. Construction on the $110 million project is expected to be completed in mid-2020. Wood Group plc (Aberdeen, Scotland) is providing EPC. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Several smaller solar projects also are to be seen throughout the region, including Invenergy LLC's (Chicago) planned Todd photovoltaic solar project in Hurlock, Maryland. The 20-MW facility will use 85,000 solar panels. Construction is expected to be completed in the first half of next year. In South Carolina, Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) will begin refurbishing five turbines at its hydropower facility in Lugoff. A couple of nuclear refueling projects also will take place in the quarter. Among these is Dominion's refueling outage for Unit 1 at its North Anna Nuclear Power Station in Mineral, Virginia. The outage on the 920-MW unit is expected to begin in September and last 34 days.
