Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Midwest market region, which comprises North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota and Iowa, is on track to become the leading market region in terms of capital and maintenance expenditures in the U.S. and Canada in 2008. Based on active projects being tracked as part of Industrial Info's North American Project Database, planned capital and maintenance project expenditures for both countries is $6.9 billion. Figures for the entire U.S. show $6.3 billion and $671 million in Canada while the Midwest region is presently at $1.5 billion.
Across the region, individual project spending activity ranges from $800,000 to $175 million. Of the 61 active projects in the planning and engineering phase slated to start construction in 2008, 46 are considered capital totaling $1.52 billion with roughly $15 million targeted for scheduled maintenance shutdowns.
Most of the upcoming project activity will take place in Iowa and Nebraska. Expenditures in both states account for nearly 60% of all spending throughout the region with Iowa showing $431 million and Nebraska showing $478 million across 24 projects. Some of the project activity includes a new $89 million meat processing plant by Hormel Foods, two corn seed production plants by Monsanto and the third phase of a $400 million grassroot beef processing plant.
The Midwest region has the second highest concentration of Food & Beverage plants in the country with more than 830 operational plants behind the Great Lakes region with 1,208 operational plants.
