Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Mississippi is seeing a wide variety of industrial projects presently under construction. While the Pulp, Paper & Wood Industry leads the state's spending for these projects, Mississippi also is seeing projects in the Power, Metals & Minerals and other industries that have made it to the construction stage.

With nearly $800 million worth of projects under construction, the Pulp, Paper & Wood Industry represents one of Mississippi's strongest industrial sectors. One of the largest projects now underway is the rebuilding of a plywood manufacturing mill destroyed by a tornado in Beaumont, Mississippi, last year. Construction to restore the mill kicked off earlier this year and will not only bring the mill up to modern mechanical standards, but also increase its annual production capacity from 380 million board feet per year to 450 million per year. Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm Bid Group (Mirabel, Quebec), a leader in wood-processing construction, is expected to complete the project in the first half of 2025. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Pulp, Paper & Wood Project Database can click here for more details on the project.

Companies also are expanding existing sawmills in the state. Southeastern Timber Products (Ackerman, Mississippi), for example, this year began a project on its mill in Ackerman to boost production capacity from 130 million board feet per year to 250 million per year. Construction is expected to be completed in the first half of 2024. Subscribers can click here for more information.

Steelmaker Steel Dynamics Incorporated (NASDAQ:STLD) (Fort Wayne, Indiana) is putting Mississippi's timber resources to another use: creating biocarbon to fuel the company's electric arc furnaces in place of anthracite, reducing the company's greenhouse gas emissions in the steelmaking process.

Steel Dynamics will use technology provided by Aymium (Gwinn, Minnesota), which according to its website uses sustainably sourced biomass to manufacture biocarbon products, including recovered and unusable wood. "Aymium's biocarbon products are renewable, carbon-negative and they replace emission-heavy fossil fuels such as coal and coke," says the company. Steel Dynamics announced the project in late 2022, and construction began a few months later. When completed later this year, Steel Dynamics estimates that when employed, the biocarbon will reduce its Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions from the steelmaking process by 20-25%. In another nod toward increased environmental sustainability, a few renewable energy projects have made their way into the state. Chief among these is Origis Energy's (Miami, Florida) grassroot Golden Triangle II solar farm near Artesia. EPC firm Renewable Energy Systems Americas Incorporated (Denver, Colorado) began construction last year and will ultimately position more than 488,000 solar panels on a single-axis tracking system to provide 200 megawatts (MW) of power.

In addition, the facility will boast a lithium-ion-based battery energy storage system (BESS) that will provide up to 50 MW of power when the sun isn't shining. Both projects are expected to be completed by the end of next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the project reports on the solar farm and BESS.

One of the biggest projects underway in the state comes from the automotive industry and involves the rapidly growing sector of U.S. electric vehicle (EV) production. Nissan Motor Company (Yokohama, Japan) began retooling its plant in Canton in the summer of 2022 to produce EVs. The plant, which opened in 2003, produces four traditional vehicle models, and the retooling project will allow Nissan to produce two new all-electric models for its Nissan and Infiniti brands at the plant. Nissan has plans to produce 15 all-electric models by 2030, and the retooling of the Canton plant provides a significant step in this direction. A smaller vehicle-maker Mullen Automotive (NASDAQ:MULN) (Brea, California), is expanding its EV-manufacturing facility in Robinsonville, Mississippi, by approximately 900,000 square feet to include a body shop, fully automated paint shop and general assembly shop. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Subscribers can click here for more details.
