Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Pacific Gas & Electric's (NYSE:PCG) (San Francisco, California) 230-kilovolt (kV) Embarcardero-Potrero Transmission Line is only 3.5 miles long, but 2.5 miles will be on the floor of San Francisco Bay. Much environmental study and permitting is needed before construction can begin.
The line will be entirely within the city. It will run from PG&E's 230-kV Embarcadero Substation to its Potrero Switchyard.

A major portion of this project consists of upgrading the Potrero Switchyard. Upgrading the substation alone will cost an estimated $200 million. A new 230-kV, gas-insulated switchyard will be constructed, along with 115-kV and 230-kV capacitance-coupled voltage transformers (CCVT); a 230-kV shunt reactor; a 230-kV/115-kV transformer; automation and control equipment; and associated facilities.
ABB Group (NYSE:ABB) (Zurich, Switzerland) was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the substation project. Black & Veatch Corporation (Kansas City, Missouri) is providing the engineering services.
Sumitomo Electric USA (Torrance, California), a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Electric Industries Limited (Osaka, Japan), is providing the cable transmission line and will perform construction. If all permits are received, construction on the line and substation is expected to begin by spring 2015, with completion in June 2016.
