More Than 470 Megawatts of Thermal Power to Start in Bangladesh Next Quarter
More than 470 megawatts of thermal power are expected to begin operation in Bangladesh by the end of next quarter.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources East Asia (Kofu-shi, Japan)--Though Bangladesh has a renewable energy goal of 10% by 2020 and biomass accounts for approximately half of the country's energy supply, most of the country's major power developments are thermal in nature. Bangladesh is also moving forward with a nuclear energy plan in association with Rosatom (Moscow), though the first nuclear power station isn't scheduled to begin operations until 2018. The country's current energy need is pressing, and thermal power is currently more cost competitive.
Only about 25% of residents are able to tap Bangladesh's electrical grid, which has a capacity of approximately 5 gigawatts (GW). The government estimates that another 5 GW are needed immediately to curb power shortages, and despite domestic trouble, whether weather-, political- or mismanagement-related, Bangladesh's economy has maintained a steady growth rate since 1990. The growth has put strain on electrical infrastructure, causing power shortages and disruption in the industrial sector.
Natural gas-fired plants account for roughly 50% of commercial electricity generation in Bangladesh, with several more plants scheduled to begin operations before the end of the year. Though nuclear energy may be a long-term answer to the country's power shortfalls, the government is looking to promote international investment in thermal projects to help stabilize supply and demand within the next few years.
Next quarter, at least two gas-related projects are due for completion in Bangladesh, according to Industrial Info. One includes a combined-cycle system that will boost the country's capacity by 150 megawatts (MW), while the other is a dual fuel power station that will utilize both natural gas and heavy oil. Several other thermal projects are also scheduled for completion and those have been designed to fire diesel. All together, more than 470 MW will be added to Bangladesh's electrical sector by the end of next quarter. Improvements to the country's dilapidated infrastructure will also be needed in order to ensure support of residents.
