Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--New England has long been a favorite of the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry, hosting an impressive roster of the top biotech and pharmaceutical companies, along with nascent but promising start-ups. The region's attractions include formidable intellectual capacity and strong governmental support. A recent analysis of Industrial Info's Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry database revealed $7.6 billion in active reported projects in New England.

The projects in play range from $1 million annual maintenance (MRO) programs all the way up to a $450 million translational laboratory building. Project activity varies from early planning to active construction status. The region includes the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. Of these, Massachusetts is the leader in attracting industry spending, with over $5 billion invested into 67 active projects.
The "Bay State" could surely claim honors as the "Bio State," as it continues to be a magnet for capital manufacturing investment. Industry giant Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) (New York, New York) chose Andover as the site for a $200 million investment to construct a 5-story 175,000-square-foot facility for clinical--and commercial--cale bulk production and R&D of biotherapeutics, pharmaceuticals and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), including coagulation factor IX, rhBMP & polysaccharides. The project team includes CRB Builders and Engineers, Lend Lease and Biotech Builders Group.
Even tiny Rhode Island is on the game, as Alexion Pharmaceuticals (New Hven, Connecticut) invests $200 million to expand its Smithfield plant. The project, planned as a four-phase, five-year event, will expand the existing approximately 85,000-square-foot campus by an additional 108,000 square feet. The plant includes 5,000 square feet of commercial production area, 11,700 square feet of clinical production space, 9,900-square-foot warehouse, 14,000-square-foot lab/office/cafeteria space, equipped for development and production of injectables for the treatment of atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome (aHUS) and other related maladies. New wastewater collection & treatment facilities, storm water mitigation facilities and new utility structures will be added as well. CRB Consulting Engineers and Joe Casali Engineering are part of the project team.
Not all of the projects are hundreds of millions of dollars, but nevertheless, are essential to enhancing the production process. EMD Millipore, part of Merck KGaA (Darmstadt, Germany), is investing $5 million to upgrade its chiller plant in Jaffrey, New Hampshire. The site manufactures Durapore, Millipak, Millidisk and other medical filters.
