Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--New Generation Power LLC (Chicago, Illinois) has entered into a license agreement with the U.S. Air Force to construct a 20-megawatt (MW) biomass power plant at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. The Alamogordo city commission has issued a letter of support for the proposed renewable energy project.
The Black Bear biomass power plant being developed by New Generation will take in trimmings from the Lincoln National Forest and orchard prunings, as well as area green waste, to use as feedstock. The 20 MW of power will go into the El Paso Electric grid, from which the base purchases power. Buying renewable energy also will help the Air Force meet its renewable energy goals.
The project still needs approval from the Public Regulatory Commission. Construction on the project is expected to start in late 2013, with startup planned for late 2014.
The plant will be located within the fence of the base, on 80 acres of land that was included in the license agreement deal. Construction costs are in the $70 million range.
