Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--New York state is packing an industrial punch in a variety of sectors, with more than $11.8 billion worth of projects currently under construction that are being tracked by Industrial Info. Power Industry projects play a big role in the state's activity, balanced by other sectors, including Pharmaceutical-Biotech and Food & Beverage.

A handful of renewable power generation projects are coming to New York. In the planning process for several years, Invenergy LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) Alle-Catt Windfarm in Cattaraugus County is one of the largest of these. Construction on the facility kicked off last summer, with engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm The Wesson Group LLC (Johnstown, New York) responsible for situating more than 80 turbines. Each wind turbine will be rated at 4.5 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity, combining to more than 340 MW when completed. The project is expected to be concluded by the end of next year. One of the largest power projects comes in the form of the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant. The Indian Point Energy Center stopped generating power in 2021 and now includes three decommissioned reactors. Before closure, two operating reactors were generating about 2,000 MW. Holtec International (Jupiter, Florida) is now leading the decommissioning process, which is expected to stretch into the early 2030s. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

Tasty treats are on the menu from a project underway in Dunkirk, New York, which will expand production of ice cream novelties. Wells Enterprises Incorporated (Le Mars, Iowa) manufactures some of the U.S.' leading brands of frozen dairy treats, including Blue Bunny products, Halo Top lower-calorie and -sugar ice creams, and the Blue Ribbon ice cream line, which features more than 50 products. Wells plans to approximately double the Dunkirk's facility's footprint with a 200,000-square-foot building addition to replace aging production equipment and double production to about 20 million gallons of products per year. The expanded plant is expected to begin adding about 200 new jobs when it is completed later this year. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is underway with a massive hospital project in Harlem that kicked off in 2022. Near the Harlem Hospital Center, construction management firm Skanska (Stockholm, Sweden) was responsible for the demolition of three buildings to make way for a new 10-story, 240,000-square-foot building that is being built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-Silver standards. The building will be equipped to provide testing and analysis services for microbiology, environmental sciences, toxicology, virology and other fields. After more than three years of construction, the project is expected to wind down in early 2026. American Organic Energy (Westbury, New York) is at work to harness renewable energy from municipal waste. At a Long Island waste composting facility, contractors are at work on a 75,000-square-foot building to process 180,000 tons per year of solid food waste and 30,000 tons per year of fats, grease and oils into 530,000 million British thermal units per year of renewable natural gas (RNG). RNG is equivalent to traditionally produced natural gas and can be directly substituted for it in pipelines. The project is expected to be completed in about a year's time, after around two years of construction. While Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) has somewhat slowed its buildout of warehousing and distribution facilities, the company is going strong in New York, with one of its biggest distribution projects being constructed in Niagara Falls. The five-story, 3 million-square-foot facility will use the latest in robotics technology and is aimed at moving goods in the region via 55 loading docks and more than 460 parking spaces for trailers. General contractor Layton Construction Company (Sandy, Utah) is expected to finish the project early next year. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
