Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) continues to take a leading role in the development of renewable energy throughout the U.S. The company's primary subsidiary, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), placed into service approximately 300 megawatts (MW) of solar power in the first quarter of this year.

In the company's recent earnings conference call, Chief Financial Officer Rebecca Kujawa said, "FPL now owns and operates approximately 2,640 MW of solar on its combined system, which is more than any other utility in the country."

FPL's ambitious "30-by-30" plan aims to install more than 30 million solar panels by 2030, making Florida a world leader in solar power production. FPL plans to add 3,800 MW of solar power to its portfolio over the next four years. According to Kujawa, FPL now controls all of the land needed to meet its projected 11.7 gigawatts of solar capacity by 2030.

FPL is achieving its solar ambitions largely through the construction of several 74.5-MW solar facilities across the state. Examples include the Blue Springs Solar Energy Center in Marianna, Florida, in the state's panhandle, and the Rodeo Solar Energy Center in Fellsmere, about 90 miles southeast of Orlando. Construction on the Blue Springs facility recently kicked off, with Black & Veatch Incorporated (Overland Park, Kansas) providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services. The facility is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Construction on the Rodeo facility was delayed due to COVID-19, but it is on track to begin in the coming months, with an anticipated completion date in the first quarter of 2022. If you are subscribed to Industrial Info's Power database, see project reports on the Blue Springs and Rodeo facilities.

FPL also is delving into battery energy storage systems (BESS) to support its solar systems. Examples include one of the largest BESS in the U.S., the 409-MW Manatee storage system near Parrish, Florida, which is adjacent to the existing Manatee Solar Energy Center. Construction on the BESS kicked off late last year and is expected to wrap up by the end of this year. Black & Veatch is providing EPC services. If you are subscribed to Industrial Info's Power database, see project report.

While NextEra's focus is increasingly turning to renewable energy, conventional generation is not completely off the table, as shown by one of the company's largest projects, the Dania Beach combined-cycle facility in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Construction on the 1,200-MW facility kicked off in 2019 and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2022. The project has an estimated total investment value of $888 million. If you are subscribed to Industrial Info's Power database, see project report.

While NextEra is a Florida-based company, its reach extends nationwide through its renewables-driven arm NextEra Energy Resources. Kujawa said Energy Resources had added 1,750 MW of renewables and energy storage to its backlog since the company's last conference call.

Examples of projects of NextEra Energy Resources include the Little Blue Windfarm near Bladen, Nebraska. The facility will use 109 General Electric (NYSE:GE) 2.3-MW wind turbines. Construction was set to begin last month, with Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) providing EPC services. The 250.7-MW windfarm is expected to be complete by the end of this year. If you are subscribed to Industrial Info's Power database, see project report.
