Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - Canada's Northland Power (Toronto, Canada) has agreed to take a majority share in three German offshore windfarms with a combined generating capacity of almost 1,000-megawatts (MW).
The independent power producer has signed a deal with German utility RWE Innogy, part of Germany's second largest power company RWE AG (OTC:RWEOY) (Essen, Germany), to take an 85% stake in the Nordsee cluster of projects. Industrial Info reported in July that turbine manufacturer Senvion SE (FWB:RPW) (Hamburg, Germany) - formerly known as REpower Systems SE (ETR:RPW) (Hamburg, Germany) -had installed the first offshore turbines for the Nordsee One project, located approximately 35km north of the island of Heligoland. It will have a maximum generating capacity of 332 MW. For additional information, see July 10, 2014, article - Work Starts at Nordsee One Offshore Windfarm.
"We are excited to announce this next stage of Northland's offshore wind development program," said Sean Durfy, President and Chief Development Officer of Northland Power. "The Nordsee One project is well advanced and increases Northland's offshore wind portfolio to 642 MW {net to Northland}, with further growth potential in subsequent phases."
Hans Bünting, Chief Executive Officer of RWE Innogy, added "Today's agreement marks the first important milestone on the way to realize the Nordsee One offshore wind project. As part of RWE Innogy's capital light strategy going forward, we are going to share the capital required for offshore-projects through partnerships. Nordsee One is another good example illustrating this business model as it allows us to realize large-scale projects by bringing in strong partners. We will continue to seek partnerships for further attractive projects."
All of Nordsee One's turbines, which stand in waters 22 to 25 meters deep, will be in place by the end of the year. The windfarm will be fully commissioned in 2017 and will be capable of generating enough power for more than 300,000 homes. Nordsee 2 and 3 will be developed in the coming decade and provide a combined generation boost of approximately 670 MW. The three windfarms will feature 162 turbines in total, spread across an areas of 100 square kilometers, and supply alost 1,000 MW of renewable energy to the German grid.
