Offshore Wind Could be Next Big Boon for U.S. Energy
Industrial Info is tracking several offshore wind projects in different development stages, and expects to see a steady increase in the coming years
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A new frontier in the U.S. renewable energy industry is quickly gaining momentum. Offshore wind resources are abundant, stronger and more consistent than land-based wind resources. Industrial Info is tracking several such projects in different development stages, and expects to see a steady increase in the coming years.
Earlier this month, Deepwater Wind LLC (Providence, Rhode Island) completed its 30-megawatt (MW) Block Island Windfarm, located off the coast of Rhode Island, following a fast-track construction schedule. This project is now being viewed as a role model for projects being proposed in several offshore U.S. locations. For more information, see December 13, 2016, article - Block Island Windfarm Begins Operations in Rhode Island.
Deepwater Wind and Dong Energy (Fredericia, Denmark), a global leader in offshore wind power, are among the few developers looking to take the charge in the growth of the U.S. offshore wind industry. In August 2016, Massachusetts formally adopted a comprehensive energy bill that includes a first-of-its-kind mandate that state utilities must purchase 1,600 MW of offshore wind power by 2027.
On the national level, the U.S. Department of Energy's Wind Program has supported a portfolio of advanced demonstration projects for some of the nation's most innovative offshore wind projects in federal waters. It also helps developers navigate difficulties such as high energy costs, market-related barriers and geographic challenges.
