Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Engie S.A.'s (La Défense, France) North American subsidiary on Tuesday announced it signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) to supply a portion of the output at a wind project in Texas. Industrial Info is tracking $8.7 billion worth of project activity from ENGIE and its subsidiaries in North America, more than 60% of which is in Texas, including $3.6 billion worth that has a medium-to-high probability (70-99%) of moving forward as planned.
Under the agreement, ENGIE will supply Ferguson (Newport News, Virginia), a value-added distributor in North America of products such as plumbing supplies, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment and fire protection products, with 65 megawatts (MW) of power from ENGIE's under-construction Century Oak wind project in Callahan County, Texas, 160 miles west of Dallas. The wind turbine power plant will utilize more than 40 turbines from General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts) to produce about 150 MW of power. Engineering, procurement and construction company Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) is expected to wrap up the project by the end of the year.

The Century Oak project is part of ENGIE's almost 7 gigawatts (GW) of wind, solar and battery storage in operation or construction across North America, according to a related press release.
The energy company aims to have 50 GW of installed renewables capacity across the globe in 2025 and 80 GW in 2030, and 10 GW of battery-storage capacity worldwide by 2030.
Among ENGIE's other projects under construction is the $650 million Fire Wells solar-plus-storage project in Rogers, Texas, outside of Temple. Construction on the 355.4-MW solar power plant and 262.5-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) unit kicked off in January, with completion by the end of 2024. Click here for the project report.
Also underway and expected to wrap up by the end of 2024 is construction of the $640 million Chillingham solar-plus-storage project, also outside of Temple. The project would utilize photovoltaic (PV) solar panels for about 350 MW of solar generation and feature an approximately 150-MW BESS facility utilizing lithium-ion technology. Meanwhile, ENGIE is developing the standalone, 303.5-MW Platinum BESS in Fannin County, in the far northeast part of Texas on the border with Oklahoma. The facility would use batteries developed by Sungrow Power (Hefei, China).
ENGIE also is developing the approximately 100-MW BESS addition at its Sun Valley Solar Plant, about 25 miles north of Waco. The solar plant has a PPA in place with consumer goods company Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG) (Cincinnati, Ohio). Subscribers can read detailed project reports for the Platinum and Sun Valley projects.
ENGIE is making other efforts to shore up its renewables capacity. In August, the company said it had agreed to acquire energy-storage company Broad Reach Power LLC (Houston, Texas). For more information, see August 25, 2023, article - ENGIE's Broad Reach Buy Broadens BESS Buildout in Texas.
