Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Pickering Nuclear Station's 540-megawatt (MW) Unit 8 was shut down on Friday, June 8, due to a tritium leak. Plant officials are still investigating the cause and are determining how to address the repairs. The station is located in Ontario, Canada, and is owned by Ontario Power Generation (OPG).
Officials stated that they will check for additional leakage while the unit is offline and make repairs if necessary. The anticipated time offline will depend on the extent of repairs; however, plant sources said that they've projected between seven and ten days for the maintenance. They're hoping they are able to return the unit online by June 15, if there are no delays.
Unit 4 has been shut down for a planned maintenance inspection outage since May 15 and was due to return online June 8. The Pickering Nuclear Plant became operational in 1971, and now has a generating capacity of 3,244 megawatts at full load. The three other generators, units 5 though 7, will remain online and run at full capacity.
OPG is an electricity generation company whose principal business is the generation and sale of electricity in Ontario. OPG's generating portfolio has a capacity of more than 22,000 megawatts, which is one of the largest in North America. Assets include three nuclear stations, five fossil-fueled stations, 64 hydroelectric stations and three wind-generating stations.
