Operations Begin at 103-Megawatt La Venta III Windfarm in Mexico

Español
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On January 17, Iberdrola Renovables S.A. (Valencia, Spain) started commercial operations at the 103-megawatt (MW) La Venta III Windfarm in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. With the project, Iberdrola S.A. (PINK:IBDRY) (Bilbao, Spain) almost doubled its wind-generated capacity in Mexico from 106 MW to 209 MW.

La Venta III consists of 121 Gamesa G52 wind turbine generator sets, each with 850 kilowatts (kW) of individual capacity. In March 2009, the state-owned company Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) (Mexico City) awarded Iberdrola Renovables a 20-year electricity purchase contract to build this windfarm as an independent power producer (IPP). The construction of La Venta III, which is in the city of Santo Domingo Ingenio, commenced in May 2009, and the facility should have became operational in November 2010. Due to delays of different sorts, the operational start-up took place 14 months later than scheduled.

This is the third operational windfarm of the Iberdrola Group on Mexican soil. The first windfarm built by the group was La Ventosa Windfarm, with 80 MW of installed capacity. It was inaugurated in 2009 in the municipality of Juchitan de Zaragoza, Oaxaca. Later, in January 2011, developer Gamesa Energia (MCE:GAM) (Madrid, Spain) sold to Iberdrola the 26-MW Bii Nee Stipa Windfarm, also in Juchitan de Zaragoza. Both facilities use Gamesa technology, adding up to 125 wind turbine generator sets.

Currently, there are 30 wind projects in Mexico in different stages of development, mainly in the states of Oaxaca and Baja California del Norte, which will add more than 7 gigawatts (GW) of new installed capacity. The existing wind-generated installed base in Mexico is 1.1 GW
