Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Pacific Northwest is home to a growing amount of industrial activity, with Oregon accounting for more than $2.8 billion in projects presently under construction. These projects cover a variety of industrial sectors and include data centers, solar farms and more.

One of the biggest projects currently underway in Oregon comes from one of the biggest names in tech: Google parent company Alphabet Incorporated (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (Mountain View, California). Google launched construction of a new data center complex in The Dalles, Oregon, about 80 miles east of Portland, in 2022. The 164,000-square-foot building is being constructed on a brownfield site that was once home to an aluminum plant. It is the fourth Google data center in The Dalles. Google is not stopping there, however, with plans to build a similarly sized building at the site in the future. Construction of the initial building is expected to wrap up in the coming months. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more by viewing the project reports on the initial construction and planned expansion.

And that's not the only technology-driven project underway in the state. Microchip Technology Incorporated (NASDAQ:MCHP) (Chandler, Arizona) has for the better part of two years been underway with an expansion project at its semiconductor-manufacturing site in Gresham, on the eastern outskirts of Portland. As part of a larger, $800 million investment, contractor M.A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota) has demolished an abandoned part of the plant and adjacent office space and is constructing new areas of the plant, including a nitrogen plant and an air-separation plant, as well as a new 11,000-gallon oxygen tank and other equipment.

Microchip Technology also is underway with the first phase of a warehouse expansion at the Gresham site, which entails construction of a 9,000-square-foot liquid chemical storage building, 13,000-square-foot dry storage building and more. This warehouse project is expected to be completed later this year, followed by the manufacturing-plant expansion in late 2026. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports on the expansions of the manufacturing plant and warehouse facilities.

Renewable energy also is becoming more of a force in Oregon, with the addition of a few solar projects, such as Avangrid Renewables LLC's (Orange, Connecticut) Bakeoven solar project near Maupin, in the north-central region of Oregon. The Bakeoven plant is being built with Canadian Solar (NASDAQ:CSIQ) (Guelph, Ontario) panels that will provide up to 60 megawatts (MW) of generation. An accompanying battery energy storage system (BESS) will have a 100-MW capacity for times when the sun isn't shining. Both portions of the project are expected to be completed later this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the projects reports on the solar facility and BESS unit.

In addition to another solar project from Avangrid, the U.S. Corps of Engineers is upgrading one of Oregon's important hydropower facilities. At the McNary Dam near Umatilla, the Corps is replacing the exciters, control systems and governors for all 14 generating units to improve responsiveness, synchronization and load stability. Construction at the 990-MW facility has been underway since the beginning of 2023 and is expected to be completed in late 2025. Subscribers can click here to learn more.

Oregon also has a strong Pulp, Paper & Wood Industry, which boasts more than $230 million worth of projects underway. Among these is Roseburg Forest Products Company's (Springfield, Oregon) expansion of its engineered wood products plant in Riddle. Roseburg's products include joists used in floor and roof construction; laminated veneer lumber used for headers, beams, studs, stair stringers and columns; and rimboard. The upgrade, which kicked off earlier this year, will add two new lathe lines and a plywood line, which will increase the plant's production when completed later this year.
