Origin Energy Drafts Maintenance Plans at Kangaroo Hydro Station in Australia

Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Perth, Australia)--Origin Energy Pty Limited (formerly Eraring Energy) (New South Wales, Australia) is planning a three-week inspection of the Unit 3 Boving Fouress hydro turbine at its Kangaroo Valley Hydro Power Station in New South Wales, Australia. The maintenance is scheduled to begin by early September 2014 and could take up to three weeks.

The maintenance project will be conducted on one of the two units at the Kangaroo Hydro Station. It will include full inspection and repairs to all mechanical and electrical equipment of the unit.

In addition to the regular maintenance, Origin Energy is planning a major midlife refurbishment on the same unit in 2015. The refurbishment project will involve a complete strip-down of the unit, as well as removal/inspection and reassembly of the turbine, generator and auxiliary equipment.

Origin Energy recently completed a similar outage on Unit 4, which took about 12 months to finish. The major refurbishment contract for both units was awarded to Alstom Power Limited (New South Wales).

Located in New South Wales, the 160-megawatt (MW) Kangaroo Valley Hydro Power Station is equipped with two Boving vertical Francis hydro turbines, each with an 80-MW capacity, attached to Alstom generators. The power station was built in 1977 by state-owned Eraring Energy (New South Wales) as part of the Shoalhaven Scheme, which includes the 80-MW Bendeela and 160-MW Kangaroo Valley hydro power stations.

All of the Eraring Energy assets, including the Shoalhaven power plants, were acquired by Origin Energy in 2013 as part of the acquisition of Eraring Energy. Bendeela Hydro Plant features two 40-MW turbines, named units 1 and 2.

According to plant officials, the Bendeela hydro plant will be completely shut down for about three weeks for annual maintenance in the last quarter of the year.
