Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--This week, renewable energy developer Origis Energy (Miami, Florida) announced that it has secured a financing agreement for a solar farm that is under construction in Mississippi. The deal will help Origis see the solar project to completion and help provide Origis with additional resources for completion of two other solar projects in Mississippi. While Origis' projects represent a significant portion of Mississippi's future renewable generation, the state contains plenty of other active solar and wind projects, resulting in total potential spending of more than $3.7 billion.
Origis secured the financing from global financial group MUFG (Tokyo, Japan). The deal allows for $344 million in construction financing for Origis' Golden Triangle I solar project in Lowndes County. Once construction is completed, the financing will convert to a long-term loan covering the 25+-year expected operational life of the solar farm.
Construction on the Golden Triangle I facility kicked off earlier this year, with Wanzek Construction Incorporated (Fargo, North Dakota) taking the role of lead engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company. Golden Triangle I is being constructed on a 1,900-acre site and will employ approximately 650,000 solar panels to produce 200 megawatts (MW) of power. The project is expected to be completed in the second half of next year. A 50-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) will accompany the solar farm and is expected to be completed around the same time.
But that's not all Origis is up to in Lowndes County. The company also is already underway with the Golden Triangle II solar farm, which will be sited about 20 miles from the Golden Triangle I site. Golden Triangle II also will generate about 200 MW and will include a 50-MW BESS unit. EPC contractor RES Americas Incorporated (Denver, Colorado) is expected to complete the solar and battery portions of the project toward the end of 2024.

An even larger solar plant from Origis awaits completion near West Point, Mississippi, in the northeast of the state. The Optimist solar farm will provide more than 270 MW of nameplate generation upon completion, which is expected in 2026. Like the Golden Triangle projects, Optimist will include a BESS unit to provide power when the sun isn't shining. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports on the solar farm and BESS.
All three projects have power purchase agreements (PPAs) in place with the Tennessee Valley Authority (Knoxville, Tennessee).
Other solar developers are at work in Mississippi, including Swift Current Energy (Boston, Massachusetts), which is underway with its Harvest Gold solar development near Indianola. The Harvest Gold facility will use panels from First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) to provide 99 MW of nameplate generation. Construction began earlier this year and is expected to last into second-quarter 2024. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
Mississippi's future renewable energy mix as of next year will include wind power, when the state's first utility-scale windfarm, AES Corporation's (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia) Delta Windfarm in the northwest of the state, about 40 miles from Memphis, Tennessee, begins operations. The facility will employ approximately 44 wind turbines to provide nearly 200 MW of power generation. According to an AES website about the project, the 14,000 acres that include the windfarm will be put to dual use and remain in operation for the farming of crops such as rice, soybeans, corn and wheat under and around the turbines. Upon completion, AES will remain the long-term owner and operator of the windfarm, which has a PPA in place with Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington).
