Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--The world's largest developer of offshore windfarms, Ørsted (Gentofte, Denmark) has set out plans to build a 1-gigawatt (GW) renewable hydrogen (H2) plant that will be linked to industrial demand in the Netherlands and Belgium.

The ambitious project, SeaH2Land, will see the 1-GW electrolyser directly linked to a new 2-GW offshore windfarm to be located in the southern part of the Dutch North Sea. The project is aiming to service the Dutch-Flemish North Sea Port cluster, which runs for 60 kilometers (km), and will be capable, if fully realised, of converting about 20% of the current hydrogen consumption in the region to renewable hydrogen. Today, the North Sea Port cluster uses 580,000 tonnes of fossil-fuel produced hydrogen per year, making it one of the largest production and demand centres of fossil hydrogen in Europe.

The project has the support and cooperation of the major industrial companies in the region, including the world's leading steelmaker, ArcelorMittal (NYSE:MT), leading ammonia producer Yara International (Oslo, Norway), chemical giant Dow Benelux and Zeeland Refinery--all of which are initiating their own collaborative H2 projects. Last month, Industrial Info reported that Yara had signed a deal with Statkraft (Oslo) and Aker Horizons (Oslo) to build what it hopes will be Europe's first large-scale green ammonia project, located in Norway. The company has committed to electrifying and decarbonizing its ammonia plant in Porsgrunn, which has a capacity of 530,000 tonnes of ammonia per year. For additional information, see August, 2020, article--Yara Backs Large-Scale Green Ammonia Project in Norway. In late 2018, a 12-km hydrogen pipeline linking Dow Benelux and Yara sites in Zeeland was commissioned by Gasunie. It was the first time that an existing main gas transport pipeline was made suitable for the transport of hydrogen.

"The Dutch-Flemish North Sea Port covers one of the largest hydrogen clusters in Europe," explained Martin Neubert, chief commercial officer and deputy group chief executive officer of Ørsted. "As the world looks to decarbonise, it's paramount that we act now to secure the long-term competitiveness of European industry in a green economy. The SeaH2Land project outlines a clear vision and roadmap for large-scale renewable hydrogen linked to new offshore wind capacity. With the right framework in place, the Netherlands and Belgium can leverage the nearly unlimited power of offshore wind to significantly advance renewable hydrogen as a true European industrial success story."

Manfred Van Vlierberghe, chief executive officer, ArcelorMittal Belgium, added: Our ambition is to build a hydrogen pipeline between Dow in Terneuzen and ArcelorMittal in Ghent. We also aim to increase the use of green hydrogen, and for this our collaboration with Ørsted is an important step."

Industrial Info is tracking a project by Dutch-based Zeeland Refinery--a joint venture between oil companies Total (55%) and Lukoil (45%)--to build a 150 megawatt (MW) hydrogen electrolyser onsite with plans to extend it to 300 MW.
