Over $4 Billion in Grassroot Plants to Begin Construction By End of 2005 for the Industrial Manufacturing Industry in North America

Expansions, modernizations, upgrades, and revamps are also key benchmarks for an industry, but the grassroot plant has always been the major indicator of a healthy industry. A perfect example of this is the Industrial Manufacturing Industry in North America. For the balance of 2005, from August 1 until December 31, the Industrial Manufacturing Industry has a robust 83 active grassroot projects worth over $4 billion anticipated to begin construction.

Ranging from light rail projects to port container terminals, from printing plants to automotive related plants, the grassroot projects beginning construction by the end of the year cover a wide variety of sectors within the Industrial Manufacturing Industry.

In addition, this spending is spread all over the United States and Canada. British Columbia is leading the spending race in terms of grassroot plants, with over $1.8 billion in projects anticipated to begin construction before the New Year. After British Columbia, the spending drops dramatically, with Utah at $450 million, Arkansas at $320 million, and Texas at $187 million.

In terms of number of projects, however, Texas is still king, with eight projects. Michigan is a close second, with six projects, followed by New York at five, and then six states tied with four projects each (Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia).

Some examples of the grassroot projects that will begin construction before the end of the year include a $1.7 billion light rail project in British Columbia, a $450 million light rail project in Utah, a $250 million slack water harbor in Arkansas, a $120 million container terminal in British Columbia, a $100 million newspaper production plant in Texas, and a $100 million regional distribution center in Oregon.

By the end of the year, grassroot project activity begun in 2005 for the Industrial Manufacturing industry will have been quite significant. This activity should continue into 2006 and beyond, as companies will continue to build new facilities to feed the various needs of their respective industries.
