Owens-Illinois on the Move in the U.S.

Besides the new plant, there are also a number of glass melting furnace rebuilds at existing plants, which Industrial Info is tracking, including the following:

Released Monday, May 08, 2006

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Owens-Illinois (NYSE:OI) (Toledo, Ohio) is in the process of moving its world headquarters to Perrysburg, Ohio. General Contractor, The Lathrop Company (Maumee, Ohio), is constructing the three-story, 100,000 square foot new headquarters building designed by Albert Kahn Associates (Detroit, Michigan), in the Levis Development Park in Perrysburg. The new headquarters will house 200 O-I employees.

Simultaneously underway is the renovation of three older buildings on the same campus, with a combined total of 400,000 square feet, which will house O-I’s R&D staff, as well as its Specialty Plastics unit, which is presently headquartered, along with its parent, at One Seagate in Toledo. Included in the refurbishment is new lighting for the complex and a new employee cafeteria. Total cost of the Perrysburg project is $24.9 million.

The company will begin the move to Perrysburg in June 2006, with the remainder following in August. The move will leave a huge vacancy at One Seagate in Toledo, but several other companies have already made inquiries about the soon-to-be-vacated space.

The company’s nationwide projects are impressive, too. In September 2005, O-I opened a new $115 million glass container manufacturing plant in Windsor, Colorado, to supply the Coors Brewing Company with glass bottles.

Besides the new plant, there are also a number of glass melting furnace rebuilds at existing plants, which Industrial Info is tracking, including the following: an $8 million furnace rebuild in Pennsylvania, to be complete in March 2007; a $4 million furnace rebuild in Virginia, which is scheduled for completion in July 2006; and numerous others.

The company is also planning a $5 million expansion of O-I’s Franklin, Indiana, plastic injection molding plant.

Owens-Illinois is the largest manufacturer of glass containers in North America, South America, Australia and New Zealand, and one of the largest in Europe. O-I has 25 glass container manufacturing facilities in the United States, and Canada, and a total of 68 worldwide. One out of every two glass containers made worldwide is manufactured by O-I, its affiliates, or licensees. O-I also is a worldwide manufacturer of plastics packaging with operations in North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Industrial Info has developed a database of all glass melting furnaces in North America, including details on furnace size, fuel, campaign life, and rebuild schedules. For details, contact Industrial Info’s Member Center at 1-800-762-3361.
