Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The strategic deep-water Port Qasim, adjacent to Pakistani commercial capital Karachi's port, was granted approval by the Cabinet's Economic Coordination Committee for the construction of terminals for receiving, storing and re-gasifying LNG. Qatar has agreed to supply 500 million cubic feet per day of LNG to Pakistan.
The Energo project will be completed on a fast-track basis over the next six to eight months with an estimated cost of $30 million to $40 million. It will handle 200 million cubic feet per day of LNG.
The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) (Karachi) is a subsidiary of Pakistan's largest integrated gas company. The liquid petroleum gas (LPG) retrofit project is to be completed at a cost of $175 million to $200 million, and it will have the capacity to handle 500 million cubic feet per day. A second new LNG terminal, with a handling capacity of 500 million to 1,000 billion cubic feet per day, also was approved. These projects are planned to be completed in 22 and 30 months, respectively.
