Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--Pakistan's private-sector refinery major National Refinery Limited (KSE:PRL) (NRL) (Karachi, Pakistan) has planned a $1.5 billion expansion of its 62,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Korangi refinery. Scheduled to begin by the end of this year, the $1.5 billion expansion program includes a revamp of the atmospheric distillation unit in the first lube oil plant from its current capacity of 12,000 BBL/d to 17,000 BBL/d, and capacity expansions of the crude distillation unit (CDU) and vacuum distillation unit (VDU) of the fuel plant to 53,000 BBL/d and 6,600 BBL/d, respectively.
Under this expansion program, NRL has also proposed to add a few new units, including a continuous catalytic cracker unit; a wax isomerization unit; a diesel hydrodesulfurization unit; a slurry hydrocracker; a distillate hydrocracker unit; a hydrogen generation unit; and other associated units such as a sulfur recovery unit and an amine generation unit.
Honeywell International's (NYSE:HON) (Morris Township, New Jersey) project management and consultancy arm, UOP LLC (Des Plaines, Illinois), is currently carrying out the basic engineering and front-end engineering design (FEED) work, which is expected to be completed by August 2012. The expansion project will take approximately two years to complete, and the new units are likely to be operational by the end of 2015.
National Refinery is owned by Attock Oil Group (Rawalpindi, Pakistan). The refinery complex has three refinery blocks, which include two lube refineries and a fuel refinery. The first lube refinery was commissioned in 1966 and has a designed capacity of 17,000 BBL/d of crude processing. The 10,000 BBL/d second lube refinery was commissioned in 1985, while the fuel refinery, which was commissioned in 1977, has a crude processing capacity of 50,000 BBL/d. National Refinery Limited enjoys a competitive edge, as it is the only refinery producing lube oil base stock in Pakistan.
Attock Group Company, which also owns the 40,000-BBL/d Rawalpindi refinery and the 62,000-BBL/d Korangi refinery is currently one of the largest private petroleum refining companies in Pakistan.
