Peterborough Renewable Secures Land for 80 Megawatt Waste-to-Energy Facility

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Peterborough Renewable Energy Limited (Peterborough, England) and partner KNM Group Berhad (Seri Kembangan, Malaysia) have secured 55 acres of land in Peterborough to further develop plans to construct an 80-megawatt waste-to-energy facility that will be known as the Green EnergyPark.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change approved the EnergyPark, and KNM paid about $31.9 million (£25 million) for the property. KNM's subsidiary KNM Process Systems will act at the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning contractor for the estimated $766 million (£600 million) project.

Construction is expected begin early next year, and the partnership is encouraging suppliers and contractors to make contact with project developers to get involved with the green energy sector.

Plans involve developing an advanced materials recycling facility that will process 275 tons per day of municipal solid waste. The waste will be fed into a gasification system that will turn it into syngas to fire a Borsig boiler, which will be installed by Biomass Power Limited (Stafford, England) for a 79-megawatt Transonic steam turbine generator to produce renewable energy for the local grid.

The project is on track for a 40- to 43-month construction schedule and is expected to be producing electricity by the third quarter of 2015. Peterborough is located about 117 kilometers north of London. The project also will contribute to the power and renewable energy legislation to develop clean energy in the United Kingdom.
