This annual award recognizes the best new and renovated laboratories from a wide variety of types, including research, quality assurance/control and teaching.

Judges for the event consisted of a distinguished board of laboratory architects, engineers, equipment manufacturers, researchers and the editors of R&D Magazine and Laboratory Design. The winners and their project teams were recognized at the annual Laboratory Design Conference, held in Raleigh, North Carolina April 24-26, 2017.
The 2017 Laboratory of the Year award winners are:
- Laboratory of the Year: The Francis Crick Institute, London, U.K. Submitted by HOK
- Total Investment Value: $700 million
- Laboratory of the Year-High Honors: Allen Institute, Seattle, Wash. Submitted by Perkins+Will
- Total investment Value: $150 million
- Renovated Laboratory of the Year: Integrative Biosciences Center, Wayne State University, Detroit, Mich. Submitted by Harley Ellis Devereaux.
- Total Investment Value: $93 million
- Special Recognition for Collaborative Learning Environment: Enzi Educational Facility [STEM], Laramie, Wyo. Submitted by Anderson Mason Dale Architects.
- Total Investment Value: $50 million
- Special Recognition for Innovative Systems: Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, Cambridge Campus, Cambridge, Mass. Submitted by CannonDesign.
- Total Investment Value: $600 million
