Phase II of Hubei Energy Group's Qiyueshan Windfarm Receives Approval

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Following the approval of the Longganhu grassroot windfarm, the Phase II expansion of the Qiyueshan windfarm recently received approval, according to the Development and Reform Commission of Hubei province.

The Qiyueshan windfarm is located on Qiyueshan Mountain, in Lichuan City of western Hubei. The windfarm has a total planned capacity of more than 500 megawatts (MW), accounting for about one-third of the total exploitable wind power resources in Hubei province. Hubei Energy Group Company Limited (SHE:000883) (Wuhan, Hubei) is responsible for the development of the windfarm.

The 49.3-MW Phase I construction of the windfarm kicked off in 2009, and all 58 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 0.85 MW, were put into operation in the first half of this year. Phase II of the windfarm will be built in Shuanglu Village, Moudao Town of Lichuan City. According to the approval, the Phase II project will be furnished with 33 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 1.5 MW, together with a 110-kilovolt step-up substation.

As the survey and engineering contractor, Hubei Electric Power Investigation and Design Institute (Wuhan) completed the preliminary survey for the project in August this year. With the approval of the Phase II project, the Qiyueshan windfarm will be the first 100-MW windfarm in Hubei province.

According to the "Wind Energy Resources Evaluation Report of Hubei Province," the province has a total exploitable wind energy of 3.32 gigawatts based on current technology. Major wind power players in China, such as China Power Investment Corporation (Beijing), China Datang Corporation (Beijing), China Three Gorges Group New Energy Company (Beijing), China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation (Shenzhen), China Resources Power Holdings Limited (Hong Kong) and China Wind Power Corporation, have rushed into the province. So far, the province has four operational windfarms with a total installed capacity of 115 MW and another 10 windfarms that are under construction or are planned to begin construction shortly.
