Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The second 1,000-megawatt (MW) unit (Unit 6) of the Phase III project at China Huaneng Group's (Beijing) Qinbei Power Plant was connected to the power generation grid on November 18, 2012, following the commissioning of the first 1,000-megawatt (MW) unit (Unit 5) on March 6, 2012. The Phase III expansion project has been put into full operation, according to an announcement from Henan No. 2 Thermal Power Construction Company (HTPC2) (Zhengzhou, Henan), the project contractor and a subsidiary of Power Engineering Corporation of China (Beijing), on November 19.

As reported, Unit 6 completed boiler flushing on August 9, 2012. On September 2, the unit passed the inspection prior to overall startup. Through the joint efforts of related parties, the unit was finally put into operation on November 18.

The Huaneng Qinbei Power Plant, located in Wulongkou Town in Jiyuan City of central China's Henan province, is owned and operated by Henan Huaneng Qinbei Power Generation Company Limited (Jiyuan, Henan), a subsidiary of China Huaneng Group (Beijing) (55%), with joint investment from Henan Construction Investment Company Limited (Zhengzhou, Henan) (35%), Henan Electric Power Company (5%) and Henan Jiyuan Construction Investment Company Limited (5%). Prior to the commissioning of the Phase III, the power plant had four operational, supercritical, 600-MW coal-fired units built in Phase I and Phase II.

The Phase III expansion is furnished with two 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical, coal-fired units with a total investment of $1.2 billion. The first 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical, coal-fired unit received approval from National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) in December 2010. However, the second unit didn't receive final approval from the NDRC until the final commissioning.

As the first 1,000-MW, coal-fired unit project invested by China Huaneng Group in Henan province, both units of the project are furnished with flue gas desulfurization and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) devices. With the completion of Phase III, the total installed capacity of Qinbei Power Plant has been expanded to 4,400 MW, and it has become the largest power plant in Henan province.
