Philippine Real Estate Company Filling Mindanao Power Gap with 12 Projects

Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Real estate developer A Brown Company Incorporated plans to build 12 power projects in Mindanao, Philippines, to address the lack of baseload power on the region's grid during the next two to three years.

The projects will provide additional power for A+ (green rated) cooperatives in Mindanao. The project also will allow cooperatives to meet the needs of peaking power. A Brown's wholly owned subsidiary, Peak Power Incorporated, will develop the 12 projects under separate build-operate-maintain contracts, then transfer 15-year agreements for new bunker-fired power sets. The projects will have the overall capacity to generate a peak of 110 megawatts (MW).

After signing the power purchase and transfer agreements with South Cotabato 11 Electric Cooperative, a 20-MW plant will be installed in General Santos City in south Cotabato, Mindanao, in the next 12 months.

The company is currently involved in the construction of a 135-MW coal-fired project in Iloilo province. This will be commissioned in 2015 and will fill the power supply gap on Panay Island and in the Visayas grid by 2016.

The company also will partake in a 26-MW hydropower project in Surigao province, Midanao, for which it is awaiting approval of its application for a renewable energy service contract.

A Brown is primarily a real estate company, but it has moved into the utilities sector with emphasis on power generation and renewable energy. It also invests in oil and gas production and the mining of precious metals.
